Now that spring has sprung, it’s the perfect time to repot your plants! Spring usually means your plants are in their growing season. This means if you repot your house plants now, they will have ample time to grow into their new homes perfectly!
Repotting a plant doesn’t mean its too small for its pot, or even that you want to change the pot at all! Repotting is more about giving your plant new soil and new nutrients that will help it grow! With that being said, we know repotting can be scary…That’s why were breaking down how you can successfully repot your plants at home this spring season!
Step One: Taking your plant out of their old pot
This is easily one of the most terrifying parts of repotting a plant, removing it from its old pot. You don’t want to accident break any roots or pull the leaves off your plant! To make sure this doesn’t happen, turn your potted plant sideways, hold the stems of your plant, and tap the bottom of the pot until your plant slides out! Sometimes this can be difficult so you may need to lightly tug on the stems. You can also use a small knife if you need to help loosen the plant from the pot. Just be careful and all will be fine!
Step 2: Loosen those roots up!
Take your fingers and massage the roots until they aren’t so clumped anymore! They need space to breathe and grow. If you have lots of roots, feel free to prune off any that are super long and skinny, those are not as crucial to your plants growth! Just make sure to keep the thicker roots in-tacked! If you have a rootball, feel free to remove any of the roots outside the rootball. Then try and untangle the rootball so your roots grow more outward while in the new pot. While you’re playing around with the base of your plant, try and remove any excess of the old potting soil. The plant has likely used up all of that soils nutrients so there is not much point in keeping it around! Clear that space out for new fresh soil that your plants can really soak up!
Step 3: Prep your pot Grab your chosen pot!
If you need help picking a pot, check out our pot guide to figure out what’s best for you! I like to give my new pots a nice rinse before I put all my new soil and plants inside. After that, pour in a layer of fresh new potting soil. You’ll want to give this layer a little bit of a pat down.
Step 4: Finally add your plant to its new home!
Take your prepped plant and pop it in your pot right on top of that layer of fresh soil you just prepped. Add some extra fresh soil around the pot into any holes there might be, filling your pot to the top! Don’t pat this soil down, as you want to make sure those roots have some space to breathe and grow. Make sure your pot has about an inch or two at the top that has no soil. This way you have room to water your plant without it overflowing. Give your plant a bit of water after its long journey, and you are all set to go!
